Every year, Afghanistan is consistently among those countries that face the most severe humanitarian circumstances globally. Latest estimates say that more than 7 million Afghans do not have access to basic health services due to lack of public health coverage and ongoing conflict and insecurity. Every year, hundreds of thousands of Afghan migrants and refugees return from Iran and Pakistan, placing an additional burden on them.

COVID-19 has only helped to strengthen the shortcomings of the Afghan health care system. As of September, more than 39,000 people had been screened positive for more than 110,000 samples. However, with a test positivity rate of 36%, the real average caseload is predicted to be even higher. Cases are expected to continue to increase as the transmission of populations escalates, creating significant consequences for Afghanistan’s economy and people’s well-being. Inflation, currency devaluation, increasing joblessness and social instability are all related to growing impacts.

IOM’s Migration Health Program, with more than 350 employees, is actively supporting the Ministry of Public Health of Afghanistan and the World Health Organization (WHO) to improve health service capacity at Points of Entry in affected communities. Additional support to other areas of response, such as static health facilities and laboratories, to efficiently prevent, track and respond to COVID-19 and other public health threats.
